Associate of Science In Nursing Degree (ADN) Programme
The DWD – in conjunction with the Bermuda College – is providing Bermudians with an opportunity to participate in an Associate of Science in Nursing Degree (ADN) programme.
The DWD – in conjunction with the Bermuda College – is providing Bermudians with an opportunity to participate in an Associate of Science in Nursing Degree (ADN) programme.
The programme is designed for individuals interested in becoming a Registered Nurse with a minimum eligibility requirement of a high school diploma or equivalent. The ADN course was implemented in 2012 – designed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Bermuda College, and the Bermuda Hospitals Board.
The course is based on an American model of nursing education. It was developed using the standards of the Accrediting Commission of Nursing Education (ACEN) (the then National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission). The ADN is a generalist approach to nursing education in that the curriculum includes medical, surgical, maternal/child, pediatrics, long term care and psychiatric nursing education.
Part of the course involves committing to a two-week clinical experience at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. This occurs during the second year of study
To ensure the success of the participants in this programme, there is a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory on campus where students have an opportunity to practice their skills and build competence and confidence prior to going out ‘into the field’ to take care of patients.
Courses take place over a semester (14 weeks) and are offered at the Bermuda College campus. There are three semesters throughout the year – fall, spring and summer – and students can enroll on either a part-time or full-time basis, with the nursing courses being completed in as little as two years, depending on each student’s schedule.
Students entering this programme must complete the Computerised Placement Test (CPT), which assesses proficiency in English and Mathematics.
Prior to starting the nursing courses, students must submit the following:
In May 2012, a Memorandum of Understanding was established between the Bermuda College and the DWD (the then ‘Department of Labour and Training’) to offer a Retraining Scholarships Fund in an effort to provide training opportunities for Bermudians in areas traditionally filled by significant numbers of non-Bermudians (for example, accounting, nursing and teaching). An estimated $700,000 has been provided to date to support further educational opportunities for Bermudians, which includes this ADN programme.
Successful students of the ADN programme will be prepared to work in health care agencies such as long-term care centers, hospitals, rehabilitation care facilities, clinics, adult day care centers, and physicians’ offices. Graduates will be competitively equipped with the knowledge and competencies to function as a professional nurse and have the ability to apply for licensure through examination.
Students interested in participating can apply for funding through the DWD and their applications will be individually assessed.

This programme was established through a partnership with Holland College in Prince Edward Island, Canada. It offers Bermudian students (aged 18 – 25 years) the unique opportunity to obtain Transport Canada approved training during the summer for 12 weeks beginning in July and completing in September.
The Holland College Marine Training Centre is located in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Students entering the Bermudian Maritime Cadet Programme enroll in a Bridge Watch Rating or Engine Room Rating course. Students can expect to become well-versed in safe working procedures, including how to identify potential hazards.
They will develop skills and knowledge to deal with these circumstances appropriately. The student’s training enables them to prepare for a career in the Merchant Marine/Shipping industry.
The courses include certifications in Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping (STCW), Basic Safety Training, Survival Craft Training, Marine Advanced First Aid, and Radio Operator Training.
Upon successful completion of the 12-week instructional programme, students must participate in a work experience for two to three months on board a merchant vessel. The DWD will facilitate such placement.
Following completion of all requirements, students will receive internationally recognised training certificates in Bridge Watch Rating or Engine Room Rating, qualifying them to apply for entry-level employment opportunities with merchant fleets around the world.
This is a fully funded programme that includes return airfare, accommodation at the school, and a stipend. Interested persons should contact a Training Officer at 292 3700.
A traineeship is a training contract between an employer and an employee in which the trainee learns the skills needed for a particular occupation.
A traineeship can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis and can be used as a valuable steppingstone to start a career in any industry. Unlike the apprenticeship programme, most traineeships take 12 to 24 months to complete on a full-time basis. However, with competency-based learning, one can complete a traineeship quicker than the 12–24-month time frame. This generally occurs for those who begin with a qualification or certification but lack experience.
Traineeships are not just for young people. Existing skills and experience are recognised and provides the trainee with credit that can subsequently reduce the requisite training time. Even if you have never formally studied or trained in a particular area, the knowledge and skills gained through work and life experience are considered using the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application of assessment.
RPL is the formal recognition of a person’s current skills and knowledge, no matter how, when or where the learning occurred.
Traineeships are encouraged to assist individuals to further advance their careers in management roles or other promotional opportunities.
Payroll tax is charged under the authority of the Payroll Tax Act 1995 and the Payroll Tax Rates Act 1995. The tax is charged on every employer and self-employed person at the standard rate.
The tax base consists of actual remuneration paid, given, or assessed by any employer or self-employed person to every employee or deemed employee. Remuneration includes any benefits derived by the employee/deemed employee or self-employed person as a result of his/her employment, whether paid in cash or in kind. The remuneration of a self-employed person or a deemed employee is the greater of his actual or notional remuneration.
However, tax is not charged on the remuneration earned by Bermudian employees on training schemes that are approved by the National Training Board. In order to have a scheme vetted for exemption eligibility, a completed Application for Approval of a Training Scheme must be submitted to the Office of the Tax Commissioner along with a complete description of the scheme.
